Have you seen the tissue test on a TV Commercial? A person smiles and holds a tissue up next to their teeth and their teeth look yellow compared to the tissue. They say "if you are not whitening, you are yellowing". Teeth yellow as we age and also from lifestyle habits as well as from what we eat and drink. Drinking coffee, tea, wine and smoking can discolor teeth. Teeth can have either extrinsic or intrinsic discoloration or yellowing.
Extrinsic discoloration is from things like drinking coffee, tea or wine. This type of discoloration is best removed when our dental hygienist professionally cleans and polishes your teeth. Intrinsic yellowing is usually caused by aging teeth. The inside of the tooth turns yellow and only professional teeth whitening can turn yellow teeth white again.
Expect dental whitening to last anywhere from 6 months to two years depending on your lifestyle and foods. Remember, as we age teeth are always yellowing. It is not recommended to whiten your teeth if you have any dental issues including receding gums, periodontal disease, cavities, misaligned teeth or roots that are exposed. We would be happy to help treat and heal any of these problems then whiten your teeth.
